SPRING UPDATE

HELLO HI OK SO IT'S BEEN A WHILE SINCE THERE'S BEEN A NEW WRITING PIECE AND I'M SORRY FOR THAT I'VE JUST BEEN SO BUSY AND I GOT INTO THIS QUICK CREATIVE BLOCK THEN I CLIMBED OUT OF IT AND I'VE BEEN FIGURING OUT WHAT TO WRITE BUT I'VE ALSO BEEN WORKING ON NEW PROJECTS AND CLOTHES FOR SPRING. I JUST WANTED TO WRITE TO SHOW YOU GUYS WE'VE BEEN WORKING ON TONS OF NEW STUFF WE JUST HAVEN'T BEEN POSTING TOO MUCH ABOUT IT.

SO THIS WILL ACT AS AN UPDATE ON THE BRAND AND THEN SOME IDEAS I'VE BEEN HAVING THAT I WANTED TO SHARE. 

 

BASICALLY WE'VE BEEN PLANNING OUT A LOT OF THE FUTURE STUFF NOW, SO THAT WE CAN GET IT PRODUCED AND MANUFACTURED PERFECTLY. IF YOU DIDN'T KNOW, WE RELEASED ALL OF THE OHKAY WINTER STUFF WEEKLY, AND WE DIDN'T LIKE HOW THAT WORKED.

So we sat down as a team and thought of how to fix what we didn't like. 

It was fun doing the weekly releases for tops and hoodies, but we want to go back to releasing projects as entire capsules.

So we hit the drawing board. 

I really wanted to work with colors. We all thought that at this point, it's only right to do colored embroidery. As I spoke on before, there's no more gildan clothes, no more low quality shirts, no more of that cheap stuff. We're moving onto bigger and better things and bringing higher quality garments to the table. That being said, things are going to be more expensive at times to buy, but only because it's costing us a lot to make them. 

We thought about doing the spring collection all around working with new colors. 

We sourced some new fabrics. We got some hats manufactured in LA. We're doing some Champion shorts. Oh, socks! There's socks! French Terry Sock! Very cool. 

We've been working on this for about two months now since a lot of the items we had to get made specially for the project rather than sourcing pieces and embroidering on them. 

So, the spring stuff is called:

 

* A TEENAGE PROJECT *

 

And this is something special to the brand because it's the first time that with OHKAY, we've gone out and made real pieces. Like we talked to warehouses, facilities, manufactures, and designers and sourced resources from them to bring our ideas to life. 

It's no more "let's buy a gildan shirt and screenprint on it and sell it as is". And I say that because in the beginning, that's what it was. And that's all we really knew how to do. At 17 most kids don't know how to manufacture goods overseas or in LA or in the mountains. It's just stuff that you don't learn until you get experience in this world. But as time has passed, and as OHKAY as a team has learned the creative process, we've opened doors we never even imagined. And the best part is, we're not going backwards, only forward and up from here.

So we're working with 7.85 ounce shirts all custom cut and dyed in Los Angeles in the Garment District. They're being sent to us and embroidered here in Chicago. All the screen printing is going to be done by this awesome 23 year old who does all of Chance The Rapper's Merch. 

He reached out to us a while ago because he found the brand through some Chicago people and he really loved how it was just a bunch of teenagers running it. He invited us to his studio and we ended up signing a deal with him, making him our head-printer for our three upcoming projects. 

 

So yeah back to A TEENAGE PROJECT.

Every time we do anything big for OHKAY, we title it as a Project. 

We look at it a lot like you'd look at a highschool project.

Here's the idea. Here's the design. Here's how we're going to manufacture it. Here's where we're going to shoot it. Here's who's going to model it. Here's when we'll post it. Here's when it'll sell. Here's when we'll ship it out by. Here's when everyone will get it. 

 

And all of that is drawn out on big white boards and we move things around and fix it like a puzzle until it's perfect. But the execution is always the most important part. We try time and time again to get A's on the projects. And don't get me wrong, we've had a few B's and C's.

Over winter we made too many of some items and not enough of others, we rushed some drops, didn't shoot the stuff as nice as we wanted, slacked on videos, ect. 

But that's fine because it was a learning curve. We looked back on the OHKAY Winter stuff and we saw that as winter progressed, our products progressed. When we rushed less, we worked better. When we forced ourselves to put stuff out, we fell behind on creativity, production direction, and execution.

So moving forward, we're going to eliminate the negatives and focus on strenghtening the postivies. 

Like a rough draft in class! Not that I'm proud to say that, but that's how it was.

Winter was our rough draft, and spring is our revision. 

And I have a big issue with the world "collection". 

As you probably know, in 2017 just about anyone and everyone has a brand. And most times the brands are really bad and they have no true meaning and it's just kids selling you Gildan hoodies for $75 and stealing your money. Sorry to say it folks, it's just how it is. And a lot of these bad brands come out with these "collections" and they tweet stuff like NEW COLLECTION DROPPING SOON. Well guess what. You're all wrong. 

The phrase "A collection" derives from the real fashion world. And it's a collection of items all with one overarching theme that correlate with the feel, the aesthetic, and the route of the brand during that particular season. 

But in the "teen-brand" world, kids just make 5 designs, put them on Gildan hoodies, and tell your their collection is dropping soon.

If you don't have a cut and sew product, a few accessories, and some real clothes, it's not a collection. 

So I never want OHKAY to be one of those lame brands. So we just title all our stuff as Projects, because to the production team, that's all they are.

 

We think of how we can take an idea, bring it to life, present it in the most unique way possible, and prove to people why they should wear these pieces rather than brands they can buy in Pacsun for high prices. 

So yeah. This is the first time we've done a big project like this, with sourced materials and custom clothes and nice embroidery and dyed garments and accessories and more than just shirts/hoodies. 

So that's why it's A TEENAGE PROJECT

And i'm very excited for it. 

It's scheduled to release sometime in May. We're hoping for the middle. 

 

But what I'm most excited for is summer. 

 

This summer is going to be really big and we have so much scheduled. Parties. Clothes. Events. Concerts. Traveling. Videos. Everything.

 

All summer long we're focusing on creating new stuff for the brand because at the end of summer I want so many kids to know about this brand.

 

But the summer project is going to be called 

 

" SUMMERCAMP ® "

And it's going to focus on the idea that kids will be kids. 

And it's going to be beautiful.

And we're going to do a short film for it.

And we're going to have a big pop up shop in Boston 

And we're going to make sure that every kid knows about this brand

And we're going to allow each and every person to be a part of this creation we've made. 

And I think that's so important. 

 

but yeah. so as of now it's A TEENAGE PROJECT 

then there's going to be another big 1/1 drop at the end of may 

then we release SUMMERCAMP®

and i'm so so excited for all of it.
